How to Get Your Baby to Sleep in a Cot or Crib

Are you struggling to get your baby to sleep in their cot? Don't worry, you're not alone! Many parents find it difficult to get their little ones to settle down in their cots for naps and for overnight sleep.

But don't despair, there are some simple tips and tricks that can help you achieve sleep in the cot, crib or bassinet.

Read on to find out how.

Set yourself up for success with these basics:

The Nitty Gritty:

1. Establish a bedtime routine:

Babies and toddlers thrive on routine, so it's helpful to establish regular steps in the lead-up to sleep. A few simple things you can do to help them sleep include taking them into your sleep environment, getting them into a swaddle or sleep sack, turning on white noise and singing a lullaby to them. Even the smell of their bedding can signal sleep. Doing the same steps before every sleep you attempt in the cot will help your baby understand that it's time for sleep.

2. Keep the room free of distractions:

When it's time for bed, keep the room dark and play white noise. This will help your baby relax and drift off to sleep. If they can hear too much external noise or see too much light, it can be difficult for your baby to settle into sleep.

3. Don't rush:

If your baby stirs or wakes as you're putting them into the cot, continue trying to settle them in the cot before opting to pick them up straight away. They may surprise you that within 30-60 seconds they're drifting off to sleep again. If they don't, go ahead and pick them up!

4. Make sure the cot is a safe sleeping environment:

It can be tempting to try anything to achieve cot sleep, even if you know it's unsafe. If you only take away one thing from this post, even if you're so tired you could cry, follow your local safe sleep guidelines. They are essential and are in place for a reason.

5. Use a Dummy, Pacifier or Comforter:

If your child is used to having a dummy, pacifier or comforter, then it can be helpful to give them one of these when you're putting them down in the cot. This can help them feel secure and comforted and can help them drift off to sleep.

6. Be consistent in your settling approach:

It's helpful to be consistent in your approach when trying to settle your baby in their cot. If you try different methods for each nap and at night, or you change it up every few minutes (or less!), it can be confusing for your young baby and make it difficult for them to settle. Stick to the same approach to getting them to sleep in the cot for each sleep period. By doing this, your newborn or baby will be able to better understand what you are asking them to do.

Finally, don't forget to be patient! It can take time for your baby to learn to settle and be comfortable in their cot, so don't give up. I suggest trying once or twice a day and opting for contact naps to save your sanity. With a bit of practice and consistency, you'll soon have your little one sleeping soundly in their cot. Good luck!
